Unfortunately, cyberattacks and data breaches have become increasingly common lately. It is therefore very important that we are aware of the risks associated with using the internet and the measures we can take to protect ourselves.
What is two-step verification?
One of the most effective ways to protect our online accounts from hackers is by implementing two-factor authentication. Simply put, 2FA is an extra layer of security on top of the standard password. This can be, for example, a unique code sent to your refurbished phone, or the use of a fingerprint or facial recognition.
Why is 2FA so important?
Here are a few reasons why 2FA is so important:
-
Improved security: Passwords alone are no longer sufficient to protect accounts from hackers. By adding an extra authentication method, such as a verification code sent to a refurbished phone, the risk of unauthorized access is significantly reduced.
-
Protection against password leaks: In the event of a password leak, where hackers gain access to usernames and passwords, 2FA can prevent attackers from accessing accounts. Even if the password is compromised, they still need the second factor to log in.
-
Increased user control: With 2FA, users have more control over their accounts. They can choose which phones or methods are used for the second authentication step, giving them more confidence in the security of their online identity.
-
Protection of sensitive data: For accounts containing sensitive information, such as financial data or personal information, using 2FA is important to protect this data from unauthorized access.
-
Combating phishing attacks: Phishing attacks, where hackers try to trick users into revealing their login credentials, are a common problem. 2FA can help mitigate these attacks because even if a user gives away their login credentials, the attacker still needs the second factor to gain access to the account.
How do I set up 2FA?
There are various ways to set up 2FA. Some apps already require it when you log in somewhere. Each service does it in its own way, so the setup process varies. The two well-known 2FA apps are: Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator. We recommend using Microsoft Authenticator because it is easy to use and well-secured.
Setting up Microsoft Authenticator
1. Installing the Microsoft Authenticator app
On Android, go to the Google Play Store, or on iPhone, go to the App Store. Search for the Microsoft Authenticator app and install it. Here are the links:
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azure.authenticator&pcampaignid=web_share
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/microsoft-authenticator/id983156458
2. Logging into the Microsoft Authenticator app
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app, tap 'Add account', select 'Work or school account', and follow the instructions to add the account. If you do not have an account yet, create one.
3. Setting up services in the app
Check within the service if Microsoft Authenticator is supported. If so, it can easily be added via a link or QR code.
